I was on my way to town this week & for me town is 2 hours away so it gives me the opportunity to listen to some pretty incredible podcasts. A podcast came up about self-awareness and it was very interesting to listen to. You know those moments when you talk to someone & what they say or do is just really odd like your looking at them thinking how could you say that or what are they doing. This person is usually we unaware of their presence and what they are doing, hence they have no self-awareness of how they are behaving & what they are saying. Something I swear by is to not judge someone at face value, including myself. I like to listen & perhaps open my mind to a different perspective, often the one thats being explained to me.
I find too often we judge a character so quickly from facts that others have told us. In a world that’s constantly evolving, filled with noise and distractions, self-awareness emerges as a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. But what does it truly mean to be self-aware, and why is it so vital in our lives?
Understanding Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the conscious knowledge of one's character, feelings, motives, and desires. It is about being in tune with who you are and how you fit into the world around you. This understanding forms the foundation for decision-making and interaction with others.
There are many benefits to being self-aware
- Improved Emotional Intelligence: By understanding your emotions, you can manage and respond to them effectively. This leads to better relationships both personally and professionally.
- Better Decision-Making: Self-awareness helps identify your strengths, weaknesses, and biases, allowing you to make informed and balanced decisions.
- Increased Self-Confidence: Knowing who you are, and what you stand for, boosts your confidence. You become more resilient, overcoming challenges and setbacks with greater ease.
- Enhanced Relationships: When you're aware of your behaviour and its impact on others, you can nurture healthier, more empathetic relationships. Being more self-aware you can open your mind to what someone else is saying so that you can have a more meaningful conversations that can bounce both ways instead of one person thinking they are right & the other thinking they are wrong. Being self-aware creates a better balance.
- Personal Growth: Self-awareness inspires life-long learning and improvement. It motivates you to set meaningful goals and achieve them.
There are some great habits that you can form over time to help your self-awareness grow.
- Practice Mindfulness: Spend time each day in quiet reflection. Consider practices such as meditation or journaling to tune into your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes when you journal or read back to yourself what you have written about your day or thoughts it can be a great way to reflect on how you have spoken about someone or yourself.
- Seek Feedback: Engage with others and solicit their feedback to gain a different perspective on your behaviour and impact. If you feel comfortable with the person it’s a great way to just ask the question? “Was I being unreasonable or was what I was saying hurtful or out of line”. It’s often in these moments that you will recognise the impact of your words & to have more thought in what you are saying.
- Observe Your Thoughts and Emotions: Notice your automatic reactions to various situations. Question why you feel a certain way and what triggers these emotions. This one is super important especially in personal relationships & marriages. Ask your spouse how they think you are coming across & be open to them giving you honest answers. Im not saying they will always be right but just offer them the opportunity to express how they feel & how you might be making them feel by having poor self-awareness.
In conclusion,
Self-awareness is not a destination but a continuous journey. As you grow and life changes, your self-understanding needs to evolve too. Embrace this process and the clarity and purpose it brings to your life.
By weaving self-awareness into the fabric of your everyday life, you can truly unlock your full potential and navigate the complex world with grace and intention. Start today by taking small steps towards greater self-awareness and transform your inner landscape into a haven of peace and productivity.
